The Moscow Kremlin By Mathew Philippou

Where?  The Kremlin is located in Moscow   It is overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square to the east.   It was chosen in this location as it was in the “heart” of Moscow.   The Kremlin was built during the time of the Tsars.

Construction  Ivan III ordered the reconstruction of the Kremlin to be not only a government capitol but a religious one.  Skilled architects from Italy, like Petrus Antonius Solariusand and Marcus Ruffus were brought to Moscow to design different components of the Kremlin, from walls to churches.

Inside The Kremlin  The Kremlin wall encloses an area of 275,000 square meters.  It housed four palaces, four cathedrals and the Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.  There is a complex that is used for the residence of the President of the Russian Federation.  Ivan The Terrible added more buildings later on though.

Uses  The Kremlin houses churches for worship, government buildings for government jobs, palaces for higher officials to reside.  The Kremlin was not always used, such as in the Imperialism times and was even changed like in the Soviat Times.

Today  Today the Kremlin still stands with now 21 towers.  Many original buildings still stand but many, during the Soviet Times, like The Chudov Monastery and Ascension Convent, were dismantled for things like Military schools and Congress Palaces.  Many museums now take up the Kremlin to attract tourism and full scale renovations are being spoken off.
