Overarching Question: How do organisms interact with their environment? Goal: What are the different relationships in an ecosystem?

Question: What is an organism?  Notes : Any living thing.

Question: What is a population?  Notes : All the organisms of the same kind (species) living in the same place.

Question: What is a community?  Notes : All the populations sharing a specific area.

Question: What is an ecosystem?  Notes : All of the living populations in an area interacting with each other and the nonliving parts of an environment.

Question: What is a biosphere? NNotes : Bio = life; Sphere = globe The part of the Earth that supports life.

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Questions:  Notes:  Abiotic = nonliving “a” means Not or Non  Biotic = living “bio” means Life Page 11

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Questions:  Notes: Producer: an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis Consumer: an organism that eats other organisms Decomposer: an organism that breaks down dead organisms

Producer: an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis

Consumer: an organism that eats other organisms

Decomposer: an organism that breaks down dead organisms

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Questions:  Notes: A Predator is an organism that hunts. Prey is the organism that gets hunted.

Relationships Among Organisms: Predator/Prey: A Predator is an organism that hunts. Prey is the organism that gets hunted.

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Questions:  Notes: A parasite is an organism that lives on (or in) another organism. A host is the organism that a parasite lives on (or in).

Relationships Among Organisms: Parasite/Host A parasite is an organism that lives on (or in) another organism. A host is the organism that a parasite lives on (or in).

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Habitat: The particular place an organisms lives  Niche: The unique role an organism plays in its environment

Topic Relationships Among Organisms:  Questions:  Notes:  Habitat: The particular place an organisms lives  Niche: The unique role an organism plays in its environment

Relationships Among Organisms – Choice Assignment: Complete on p. 10 of your science notebook.  Level 1 – Vocabulary Pictures: Choose level 1 if the vocabulary words are very new to you or you just don’t know them well:  For each vocabulary word you didn’t know, read the definition for the word and draw a picture that will help you remember what the word means. Example: Organism – draw a picture of a beetle; Population – draw a picture of a group of the same kind of beetles.   Level 2 – Brainstorm: For each of the relationships among organisms vocabulary words, brainstorm a list organisms or places common in Minnesota that match each vocabulary word.   Level 3 – Comic Strip: Use as many of the relationships among organisms vocabulary words as you can to create a comic strip that explains what the vocabulary words mean. Focus on the words that you’re least familiar with first.   Level 3 – Song, Rap, or Poem: Use as many of the relationships among organisms vocabulary words as you can to write a song, rap, or poem that would help a third grader understand what the vocabulary words mean. Focus on the words that you’re least familiar with first.

Word Splash  Word Splash: Writing 1 or 2 sentences using science vocabulary words. Student picks 2 to 4 vocabulary words to write about what they learned.  Example: Traits, genes, DNA, chromosomes, Punnett Square I learned that I can predict traits using Punnett Squares.

Generalize – Ecosystem Word Splash: Population Producer Ecosystem Biosphere Consumer Decomposer Predator Organism Host Prey Parasite Community
