2 Matter can be divided into two categories Pure Substances All the particles are the same.

3 Matter can be divided into two categories Mixtures Pure Substances All the particles are the same. There are different types of particles mixed together.

4 Pure Substances can be divided into two categories Elements The atoms that make up the particles are identical.

5 Pure Substances can be divided into two categories Compounds Elements The atoms that make up the particles are identical. The particles are made of different atoms bonded together.

6 Elements All elements (the different types of atoms) are listed on the Periodic Table.

7 Mixtures can be divided into two categories Heterogeneous The different parts are visible and can be separated mechanically.

8 Mixtures can be divided into two categories Homogenous Heterogeneous The different parts are visible and can be separated mechanically. The different parts are not visible.

9 Suspension A Heterogeneous mixture made of a liquid ans solid particles that settle. Example: River Water P. 466 draw figure 7

10 Colloid A heterogeneous mixture whose components never settle. Example: Milk, smoke, fog Particles are large enough to scatter light (Tyndall Effect)

11 Solution The same thing as a homogeneous mixture A solute is dissolved in a solvent Examples: Kool-aid, coffee, tea, air, gasoline, steel
