3 Create a Vision Plan the next meeting Establish ground rules for the operating of the council Develop a vision for your school health council

4 Plan the Next Meeting The second meeting of your council should be designed to create the vision for your School Health Council. Engage the volunteers that signed up at the first meeting. Decide on a facilitator—maybe even a professional.

5 Plan the Next Meeting Checklist Use volunteers from first meeting Reserve meeting space Send out letters of invitation, minutes from last meeting, and agenda 10-14 days in advance. Prepare handouts and presentation Gather supplies and A/V equipment Find council member to take minutes

6 Establish Ground Rules At the beginning of the second meeting: Ask the group to identify ground rules for the council. Lead the group to set rules regarding: Respect for others opinions Punctuality and sticking to the agenda Decision-making processes

7 Establish Ground Rules Formalize the rules stated Vote to adopt ground rules Include them in the minutes for the meeting.

8 Vision A vision describes where you want to go with your efforts How do you want your school to look in the future? What does your school look like today? How do you want your community to look in the future? What does your community look like today?

9 Vision Identify the need for a vision “Where we want to be” handout “A Vision…” handout

10 Vision Reflect on Vision for School and Community Health “Creating a Vision for Our Community and School” handout Answers to this exercise will provide the framework for the vision statement.

11 Vision Discuss possible vision statements Ask the council to break into small groups Provide “Our Vision for the Future” handouts to each group and ask them to complete it as a group. After appropriate time, reassemble the group. Identify common words, phrases, and ideas to use for the basis for the vision statement.

12 Vision Guidelines for the vision statement: Describe where you see your school and community in five years Brief—one to two sentences Easy to remember Once adopted, it will reflect your public image.
