8 UCAS website – APPLY11 Register Complete an application: - include personal details - qualifications (including GCSEs, A levels, music grades) - up to 5 choices of university: September 2011 entry or defer to September 2012 - personal statement – consider this as a paper interview! 9 47 lines or 4000 characters Why have they chosen this course? What can they offer the university? Include work experience, volunteering, extra curricular activities, sports clubs, guiding/scouts, drama, music, Duke of Edinburgh etc Future plans The same personal statement is used for each application. 10 Barton Peveril Non-academic reasons for rejection by Universities Had not read the prospectus. Lack of communication skills Limited commercial interest Weak of outside interests The candidate brought his parent who answered all the questions ‘Dreams’ about being a lawyer Underestimated the workload Poor communication skills No clear commitment No work experience Lack of knowledge of current affairs Poorly written and organised personal statements

13 Barton Peveril Compact Arrangements How do students apply? Apply through UCAS in usual way Complete Compact Application (available from Student Services) Recommendation made by Barton Peveril Possible offer of a place on Higher Education course with lower entry requirements

14 Barton Peveril 30 September 2010 - Internal deadline for students applying to Oxbridge or for Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry 5 th November 2010 - Internal deadline for all other applications 14th January 2011 -Final UCAS external deadline for applications Encourage students to apply as early as possible – UCAS APPLY11 available from mid June 2010.
