Consciousness Consciousness- Awareness of yourself and your environment What is one thing that you are consciously doing right now?

Body Rhythms Circadian Rhythm- Biological rhythms that occur every 24 hours –EX. Wakefulness, eating and digestion At what time does your circadian rhythm tell you to wake up?

Lack of Sleep: Decreases the body’s ability to fight against disease Increases a stress chemical, cortisol, which affects memory & learning. Is more of a danger on roads than drunk driving. Causes irritable emotions. Causes early aging. ** Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep Which effect do you experience the most when you are lacking sleep?

How We Sleep When we see darkness, the hypothalamus sends out melatonin- a hormone that helps us to fall asleep Do you turn down the lights before bedtime, or does your house stay bright?

Why We Sleep – Several Theories We are protected from nighttime dangers. Sleep allows us a relaxing time to heal and re-energize –Tissues are repaired, memories are stored, and things learned are reorganized. Our brains can review important information Which theory do you agree with? Why?
