Safety Rules, Practices and Devices Electric Shock – Nerve and muscle (including breathing and heart beat) functions work off of electric pluses (electron movements) sent through the body. Electric current can impair these functions of these parts of the body causing paralysis. If the current is strong enough it can cause death or severe burns (electrocution). If current passes through the heart region serious damage can occur. From hand ---> hand hand ---> foot

Severity of shock depends on 3 major factors: 1. The voltage(push) and amperage(amount) across the points at which physical contact is made. 2. The resistance or opposition which the body offers to the passage of current. 3. The type of contact which is made between the body and the points across the voltage. 1.0 Severe Burns Stops Breathing AMPS.2.1.03.01 DEATH Tough to breath Can’t Let Go Pain Tingle

Electricity Naturally wants to go from a source to the earth. Grounds – Are used to conduct stray current from source to the earth (ground)

Methods of use: Grounded outlet – (receptacle plug): rounded pin is connected to a wire which is connected to a ground source. (Rod in ground or water pipe) Cabinet ground – ground connected to case of appliance. (usually will find on washing machine, green ground wire) Two-to-three wire adapter – Third free wire on plug should be connected to ground point. (Sometimes to screw at center of outlet)

Wired to chassis circuits – The chassis is used as a contact point. Shock is possible due to chassis carrying current in wrong direction. (Can be checked with neon tester) Use of Polarized Plug (one larger lug) is used to make sure current flow is in the correct direction. GFCI – Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter – stops flow of current if there is a difference between hotwire and neutral wire in an AC circuit of more than 5 mA. 1mA =.001A 5mA =.005A

Open - Closed - Short Circuits Fuse - Used to control flow of current (measured in amps). If the current becomes too high the "fuse link" (element) will melt or burn out and stop current flow.

Circuit Breaker - a mechanical device - performs the same function as a fuse. - triggering mechanism is controlled by heat or by magnetism. - Can be reset Fuses and Circuit breakers are always placed in series with the circuit they are protecting. series parallel
