The Dangers of Smoking What does smoking do to our bodies? What’s inside a cigarette?

I know the difference between legal, illegal, medicinal and recreational drugs medicinal A medicinal drug is taken to cure and/or alleviate any symptoms of an illness or medical condition, or may be used as a preventive. recreational Drugs that affect our CNS control the movement of chemicals across the synapse. These are called recreational drugs eg hallucinogens Legal drugs are readily available throughout society for all ages, over 16 or over 18 (refer to worksheet) Illegal drugs are NOT readily available throughout society and persons found using or selling face prosecution (refer to worksheet)

Objectives By the end of the lesson I: Know the difference between medicinal, recreational, legal and illegal drugs Know that smoking tobacco is legal Know that the use of tobacco will lead to a range of health issues and an early death Know that babies born to smoking mothers have a low birth weight Know that the nicotine in tobacco smoke is the addictive chemicals whereas other chemicals cause cancer

Smoking is legal but what are you breathing in? Use the provided worksheet, the next 4 slides and pages 54-55 to 1.Complete the worksheet 2.Respond to this A* question What’s all the fuss about smoking? (10marks) I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

Tar This black, sticky substance clogs the lungs and makes colds, bronchitis and lung disease much more likely. What are you breathing in? I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

Hydrogen cyanide This is a poisonous gas that is often used to execute prisoners in the USA! And smokers breathe it in with every drag on a cigarette. It damages cells in the lungs. What are you breathing in? I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

Carbon monoxide The haemoglobin in your red blood cells will pick up carbon monoxide rather than oxygen. This reduces the amount of oxygen carried to the cells in your body. This might be the reason cells become starved of oxygen. It certainly causes problems for a developing baby if the mother smokes. What are you breathing in? I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

Nicotine Nicotine is an addictive drug that acts directly on the brain. It is the reason smokers find it difficult to give up. It also raises the heart rate and blood pressure which can lead to other health problems. What are you breathing in? I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

 QUIT Carcinogens Carcinogens are chemicals which cause cancer. We know that tobacco smoke contains a lot of carcinogens, and as a result many more smokers than non- smokers suffer from lung and throat cancers. However, sometimes we do not know exactly which chemicals do the damage. A cancerous tumour I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues

Only five a day from age 14 to age 30 or £7,300 Smoke 15 a day for 20 years or £35,000 (but you probably won’t survive long enough anyway if you smoke that many!) Ten years smoking 25 a day or £23,000 50 a day for 35 years or £160,000 And something you’ll never get from smoking… I know that smoking tobacco is legal, but that it is addictive and leads to many health issues
