Time to take notes!!!! Remember: Eukaryotic = nucleus Prokaryotic = no nucleus
Cell TypeEukaryotic Cell Wall?No # of CellsMulti-cellular Obtain foodConsume it! MovementMost are mobile ReproductionSexual or Asexual (depends on organism) Fun Fact Found within most habitats Require oxygen Maintain homeostasis
Cell TypeEukaryotic Cell Wall?Yes # of CellsMulticellular Obtain food Photosynthesis Require: Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Water, Minerals (from soil) MovementNon-mobile Plants will grow toward light, leaves move ReproductionSexual /Asexual Fun FactPlants are found virtually everywhere Except: Arid deserts, arctic, deep ocean Fun Fact! Carvings in tree stems will not move!
Cell TypeEukaryotic Cell Wall?Yes # of CellsMostly Multicellular Obtain food Decomposers Organic Compounds (plants and animals) MovementNon-mobile BUT cells can move as a team ~Through hyphae “Grow to get food” ReproductionSexual or Asexual (spores) Fun FactFun Facts! The largest fungus is 2,200 acres big! It takes 50-100 years for fungi to decompose a tree http://www.brainpop.com/science/diversityoflife/fungi/
Cell TypeEukaryotic Cell Wall? Some have, some don’t # of Cells Unicellular or Multicellular (but they don’t have specialized tissue!) Obtain food Photosynthesis Organic Compounds (plants and animals) MovementFlagella Cillia Pseudopods – False foot Non-Mobile ReproductionSexual or Asexual (spores) Fun FactMust live in liquid (water) There are 60,000 types! http://www.brainpop.com/science/diversityoflife/protists/
Cell TypeProkaryotic Cell Wall?Yes # of CellsUnicellular Obtain food Use organic compounds (normal stuff) MovementFlagella Tumbling Re-arranging cytoskeleton ReproductionAsexual (Binary Fission) Fun FactThey live in every normal habitat on earth – even in YOU!! There are 10x more bacteria cells in your body right now than human cells!
Cell Type Prokaryotic Cell Wall? Yes # of Cells Unicellular Obtain food Photosynthesis Decompose (plants and animals) Use elements (nitrogen, hydrogen, sulfur) Movement Flagella Tumbling Re-arranging cytoskeleton Reproduction Asexual (Binary Fission) Fun Fact They live in every habitat on earth – even in YOU!! There are 10x more bacteria cells in your body right now than human cells! Cell TypeProkaryotic Cell Wall?Yes # of CellsUnicellular Obtain food WIDE RANGE!!! (weird stuff!) Inorganic compounds, Ammonia, Metal Ions, Hydrogen, Gas MovementFlagella ReproductionAsexual (Binary Fission) Fun Fact They live in EXTREME habitats! Halophiles (high salt), Acidophiles, Thermophiles, Alkaliphiles, even on Mars?? http://www.brainpop.com/science/diversityoflife/bacteria/
Now It’s Your Turn! Complete the Now It’s Your Turn activity on page 38. Ingest (taking in gases and nutrients) Digest (changing nutrients to useable form) Reproduce (producing offspring) Grow and repair (developing and healing) Sense and respond (maintain normal condition) Made of cells (made of the basic unit of life) Excrete (get rid of waste)
Kingdom Cubes DO NOT CUT THE CUBE UNTIL IT IS FINISHED!! The kingdom cube is an activity that will help you learn about the 6 kingdoms Using the outline of a cube, draw a picture to represent each kingdom Write the appropriate information from your notes on each face WITH A PENCIL After you have all of the information on each face, you may use markers to decorate your cube…YES, you must add color! Once you have finished with your cube, AND YOUR NAME IS ON IT, you may fold your cube and obtain 3 small pieces of tape from the teacher to secure it
Kingdom Cube assembly Assemble the kingdom cube by: Cutting it out Folding on all of the lines Obtain three (3) small pieces of tape Fold and tape Archeabacteria to Animalia Fold and tape Plantae to Archeabacteria Fold and tape Protista to Animalia
