SPECTROSCOPIC CONCEPTS BY Dr.JAGADEESH

INTRODUCTION SPECTROSCOPY: Study of interaction of matter with electromagnetic radiationelectromagnetic radiation Energy absorbed or emitted by the matter in discrete amounts called quanta. Absorption and emission throughout the range of electromagnetic spectrum.electromagnetic spectrum From the frequency of light absorbed or emitted energy levels existing in the atom or molecule can be understood.

Spectroscopy Spectroscopy can be broadly classified in to Atomic Spectroscopy and Molecular Spectroscopy. Atomic Spectroscopy: Emission or absorption of light by atoms- Atoms have only electronic energy levels Molecular Spectroscopy: Emission and absorption of light by molecules. Molecules have rotational, vibrational and electronic levels. Complex compared to atoms. rotational, vibrational and electronic levels

Nature of Electromagnetic radiation Propagated at high velocity No supporting media is required for propagation. Both electric and magnetic field components are present. The fields oscillate in planes perpendicular to each other and to the direction of propagation. The velocity of e.m.r is 3x10 8 m/sec

Parameters of Electromagnetic radiation Wave properties Wave length Frequency Wave number Particle Properties Energy = hν =mc 2 = hc/λ = mc2 h/λ = mc =p or h/p =λ
