2 Anita Bauer Roberts She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 3, 1942. 49 th most cited scientist in the world, being the 2 nd most cited female scientist in the world. Chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute

3 Educational Background Attended Oberlin College and received undergrad degree in Molecular Biology Attended Grad school at University of Wisconsin-Madison and received her doctorate in Biochemistry in 1968 Attended Harvard and did her post- doctoral work.

4 Research/Working Field In the early-1980s, Dr. Roberts and her colleagues at the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland began to experiment with the protein, called TGF-β, short for transforming growth factor beta.

6 TGF-Beta TGF-Beta is a protein that is critical in healing wounds and bone fractures and that has a dual role in blocking or stimulating cancers (Breast and Lung in Particular) T.G.F.-beta was later shown to have an effect on regulation of the heartbeat, the response of the eye to aging and also serves as "a switching point, a node through which all kinds of information flows."

7 Working Field Dr. Roberts joined the National Cancer Institute in 1976. From 1995 to 2004, she headed the institute's Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis. Dr. Roberts was a former president of the Wound Healing Society. In 2005, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

9 Personal Accomplishments “My Journey” where she shared her thoughts and feeling about the difficulties and surrealism of being diagnosed with cancer, going through cancer treatments and trying to survive cancer (The Song of Bella Donna) She continued her research until Her death from gastric cancer in March 2006 (fought it for 2 years!)
