23 5 Ways to become Fossilized: 1.Permineralization & Petrification – organic tissues are replaced with minerals from the surrounding rock, including silica, calcite or pyrite. 2.Unaltered preservation - organism is preserved in its original state (example: trapped in tree sap) 3.Carbonization (Coalification) - removal of all but the carbon elements (hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are removed) 4.Trace & Molds - These fossils are the molds and casts of organisms which have dissolved or rotted away, leaving only a trace of their existence. 5.Recrystalization - crystals form within the original structure, replacing it, resulting in a crystallized copy.
