3 How will Careers Help You? Navigate through your high school years. Chart and prepare your post-high school journey. Prepare your portfolio. (graduation requirement) Prepare for your Student Led Conference. (graduation requirement)

4 Why Do I Need Careers? It is a graded course. Bethel School District/WA State graduation requirement Counts toward Athletic and Activity eligibility Helps keep you on track to graduate and plan for your future

5 When Does Careers Meet? Mondays and Fridays between 2 nd and 3 rd periods.

6 Your Advisor Is Here To SUPPORT your academic achievement ADVOCATE for you when you need help. Help you NAVIGATE through high school. Help you build your PORTFOLIO. Help you prepare your STUDENT LED CONFERENCE. Not just a pretty face!

7 Portfolio Requirement 3 inch three ring binder with dividers and page protectors. Three portfolio sections: –LEARNER –CAREER –CITIZEN

8 LEARNER Documents Four Best Works –Must be something where you did your best, learned something, and are proud of your work. –Must be from 4 different classes. –One due each quarter. –Your teachers may give you recommendations for Best Work submissions. Goal Setting Progress Report Reflections Semester Reflection Transcript Credit Check

9 CAREER Documents College/Career Fair Career Pathways Interest Survey Post-Secondary Options Presentation Job Shadow Program of Study Post High School Transition Plan

10 CITIZEN Documents Activities, Honors, Awards –Place copies of awards in your portfolio. –Keep track of these for your resume’, and scholarship/college applications. Community Connection –Minimum of 8 hours are required each year of high school. Four of the eight hours this year must be from a Job Shadow experience. –Start thinking of what you will do this year – your Careers teacher must give prior approval. –Once approved, complete and document your hours. –Job Shadow requirements and forms are located in the GK Job Shadow packet. Community Connection/Job Shadow Reflection Paper Community Connection/Job Shadow must be completed in order to successfully pass Careers.

11 DOCUMENTS Your portfolio documents should be typed or neatly hand written. Make sure your documents look professional and may be read by anyone. Download Careers Lesson Plans and Forms from the GK Counseling Center website.

12 CareerCruising.com Through CareerCuising.com you will –Complete interest inventories –Complete learning style inventories –Research careers –Research post-secondary options –Learn about financial aid

13 PRESENTATION (AKA: Student Led Conference or SLC) Your student Led Conference will take place in May. The SLC is an oral presentation with a multi-media component. The SLC must include documents from your portfolio. You will have 15-20 minutes for your presentation. The SLC is mandatory - it must be successfully completed in order to pass Careers.

14 Your Presentation Will Address These Questions 1.How will you contribute to society? 2.Who are you socially? 3.How is school going for you? 4.What experiences have you had that make you who you are? 5.Have your skills and career interests changed? How are they driving your career choices? 6.How have you completed your community service hours? What did you learn from your Job Shadow?
