Animals in the Grassland in Africa Africa-aardvark, African Wildcat, African elephant, many antelopes, baboon, buffaloes, Cape, hunting dog, cheetah, giraffe, gnu, hartebeest, hippopotamus, hyena, impala, jackals, kudu, leopard, lion, meerkat, mongoose, oryx, ostrich, red billed oxpecker, rhinoceros, vulture, wildebeest, zebra, and many other animals.

Animals in the Grassland in South America and Eurasia South America – armadillo, opossum, fox, jaguar, llama, puma, rhea, tapir, many rodents, and many other animals Eurasia – golden pheasant, leopard gecko, snow leopard, vole, and many other animals

2 Interesting Facts about Grassland’s animals The animals that live in grasslands have adapted to dry and windy conditions. They are grazing animals. The U.S prairies are used to graze cattle and to raise cereal crops.

Some Interesting Facts about the Grassland There are two types of grasslands: Tropical and Temperate In Eurasia temperate zone grasslands are called “steppes”, in South America temperate zone grasslands are called “Pampas”

Plants that are in the Grassland  Typically fifty percent of the plants in many grasslands will be grass  The other fifty percent of the plants are “Forbs”, but people call them Wildflowers.

2 Facts about grassland’s plants  Botanically grasslands support 81 species per 1,000 M2.  The grasslands are in every continent except Antarctica.

Savanna’s Climate Summer- droughts Winter – land freezes over Windy Wet season Dry season Long rainy season followed by a droughty season

Location North America- prairies Asia South America South Africa California And more …

Rainfall Receive an annual rainfall of 76.2cm (30- 40 in) Certain Savanna’s receive as little as 15.4 cm (6in)or as much as 25.4cm (10 in) of rainfall

Farming Grains-wheat, corn, rice, oaks, rye, barley, sorghum, millet, and sugarcane, these are natural resources. Roots of grasses make soil rich for farming Some grasslands are used for animal grazing

Populations There are many animals in the grasslands There are few trees in the grasslands There are lots of different types of grass growing in the grassland

Environmental concerns There are very few natural prairie regions that remain People turn some regions in to farms because of the rich soil There are droughts and occasional wild fires in the grassland
