Multidisciplinary perspectives to learner corpora SLE 2010. Language contact: at the crossroads of disciplines and frameworks

Multidisciplinary perspectives to learner corpora SLE 2010. Language contact: at the crossroads of disciplines and frameworks Vilnius, September 2nd, 2010 Convenors Nicolas Ballier (University Paris-Diderot) Ana Díaz-Negrillo (University of Jaén, Spain)

Background Meurers (2009: 469) lays emphasis on the need «[…] to determine which learner language properties are useful or important to analyse in order to provide feedback and model language acquisition ─ a question that highlights the need for an intensive interdisciplinary dialogue between the fields of Intelligent Computer- Assisted Language Learning (ICALL), Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Foreign Language Teaching (FLT)». Meurers, D. 2009. On the automatic analysis of learner language. Introduction to the Special Issue. CALICO Journal, 26/3: 469-473.

Background Previous workshops  2008 (University of Jaén), learner corpora and error annotation held at the on corpus annotation.  2009 (University of Paris 13), corpus interoperability.  2010 (University of Paris 13 and Paris-Diderot), phonetics and learner corpora. On-going learner corpora  NOCE (University of Jaén, since 2003).  Charliphonia (Charles V, Paris-Diderot, since 2009).  LONGDALE (UCL and Paris-Diderot, since 2009).

Aims of the workshop Exchange of methodological approaches and tools used in the treatment of learner data.  Presentation of on-going research with a focus on: –learner corpus design, –file processing, –annotation, –interoperability of tools, –learner corpus exploitation (FLT, SLA). Dialogue between the different areas involved (linguistic description, computational linguistics, corpus linguistics, SLA and FLT).  Discussion about the needs that researchers on learner corpora may have and the contributions they can make.
