STATISTICS Section 1.1 Introduction

STATISTICS WRITE IT DOWN! It involves collecting numerical information called data, analyzing it, and making meaningful decisions based on the data.

DATA – two types QUALITATIVE: Data that is observed QUANTITATIVE: Data that is measured

Qualitative Data It refers to observations that are attributes or characteristics. Examples: Hair color, eye color, religion, blood type

Quantitative Data It represents observations or measurements that are numerical. Examples: age, weight, height

Quantitative Data Data that is a COUNT, is called DISCRETE Numerical Data. Data that is a MEASUREMENT, is called CONTINUOUS Numerical Data.

Identify as discrete or continuous. 1) Attendance at the UD football games. 2) Number of girls you have on your contact list. 3) Your weight. 4) Your age. DISCRETE CONTINUOUS

NO WAY! Statistics are often used to MISLEAD people. Check out these interesting little factoids!  Statistics show that people are living on average, longer today than did their parents.  What can we conclude about this?

 Statistics show that more mothers are entering the full time work force instead of staying home with children. Can we conclude that mothers do not care about their children anymore?

 Statistics show that there are more DUI arrests now than there ever has been in the US. Can we conclude that today’s drivers are worse than ever before?
