2 Thursday September 16, 2015 Lesson Goal: BTEOTL Students will be able to identify the relation between mass, volume, and density. Also, Students will begin calculating density using the given information. .

4 What is Density? Density – the amount of matter that will fit into a given amount of space. - Density = mass/volume. - Density is measured in grams/cubic centimeter (g/cm3) or grams/millimeter (g/mL). M D V

5 How can density be used to identify a substance?
Guiding question How can density be used to identify a substance? Substances have a specific, unchanging density. You can calculate the density of a substance and then compare it to the known density of various substances.

6 Guiding question Imagine you went to a planet where the gravity was different from Earth’s. Which would change: your mass or your weight? Explain. Your weight would change, because weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on the mass of a substance. Mass does not depend on the location of the object.

7 What is Volume? Volume is the amount of space that a substance or object occupies *Volume = Length x Width x Height (for regularly shaped objects). Using water displacement, determine the volume of an irregularity shaped object. Using a graduated cylinder, determine the volume of liquid Liquid volume is measured milliliters (mL) Solids volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cm3) 1 milliliter(mL) is equal to 1 cm3

8 Measuring the volume of an irregular solid using Water Displacement Method
Step 1: Add water to a graduated cylinder and record the amount. Step 2: Place the object into the graduated cylinder. Step 3: Record the volume of the water with the object. Step 4: Find the difference in water volume by subtracting. Step 5: Convert the liquid volume measurement (mL) to the measurement for solid volume (cm3). *** Remember: 1 mL = 1 cm3 A B

Guiding question What tools are used to measure volume? Volume of liquids can be measured with graduated cylinders. Volume of solids can be measured with rulers.

Density is written as g/cm3 (regular object) Density is often expressed as grams per milliliter, or g/mL (irregular objects)
