Communication & Technology UK POLICE

The TAZER Available for All authorised Firearms officers since September 2004 (technology around since 1960’s) This weapon is seen as a less lethal option for such officersless lethal Actually used outside of ‘only Firearms officers’ since the Home secretary gave approval for chief officers on the 20th July 2007 for 10 forces to complete a trial.

Why required in the UK? Violent crime on the increase, Police struggle to contain violent criminals. Establishes control firing two probes from ‘21 feet’ to incapacitate a violent criminal. An alternative - Cases of innocents shot dead ‘lethal force’ by UK Police Tactical Firearms Squad

What does it do? Looks and is operated as a normal sidearm- powered by 8 AA batteries Tazer interferes with the Human Body’s electrical impulses. Current introduced through the skin and disables sensory nerves. Electricity delivered for 5 seconds then switches off (redone if officer pulls trigger again).

Can it be Abused? In built microchip records time/date/activation of trigger (can be downloaded for evidence) Can it cause a heart attack? – current is a different wavelength of the impulse of pacemakers. Unlawful for any citizen to possess such an item (police and military only)

Your work Take notes on the Video -What happened and do you think UK Police should have TAZER?- not just Yes / No answers !!Video Find case studies and summarise findings– ‘Eye witness’ accounts of the Tazer being used in the UK.
