2 The Extravagant Sower

3 13:1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying:

4 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5

6

7 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

8

9 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

10

11

12 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

13

14 “What kinds of soil are you?” the youth responded, “We are the good soil!”

15 If that is what it is about, then this parable should be called “the parable of the four kinds of ground.”

16

17 Instead it has been known for two thousand years as “the parable of the Sower,”

18

19 What if it is not about us at all but about the sower? What if it is about the extravagance of the sower who is not concern about waste, and just keep on sowing because he is confident that when the time comes he will have a bountiful harvest.

20 If we were sowers, we would devise an efficient operation, we would not waste seeds on birds and rocks and thorns, but concentrate only on the good soil.

21 The Sunday school should not be run like a private elite school. We don’t just focus on the few students who are promising – who are considered good soils - we focus on all the students.

22 It is all about Christ. Christ initiates the salvation while we were still sinners and Christ will complete it. Phil 1:6, the word says, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

23 Christ will produce the fruit of spiritual maturity in your students’ lives. John 15:5, if anyone remains in Christ, he will bear much fruit.

24 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. There are many reasons why people don’t hear the word of God

25 Some have hearts that are hardened and nothing can penetrate them. Some are so familiar with Jesus’ stories that they no longer hear His words.

26 Mk 6:3, Isn't this the carpenter? Aren’t this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Jn 10:20, many of them said, "He is… raving mad. Why listen to him?"

27 Some are stressed out and distracted by so many things that they can’t hear God. Some have financial trouble and they can’t hear God Some have marital problem (parent child issue) and they can’t hear God.

28 I pray you hear that God is generous and extravagant; God understands your struggles, worries & troubles, and He wants to encourage you with these words.

29 Heb 13:5-6, God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
