College Prep Statistics Chapter 1 Dart Throw Review

Dart Throw Review Students will be split up into groups of four. Each student will be assigned a letter A-D. All students are responsible for backing up their answers on their own sheet of paper. When a letter is called, that group member must present their work to a teacher. If the student is correct and has shown all work, then they will put a tally mark next to their team name. If the student is incorrect, they will no receive a tally mark and the group must correct their work. After a few rounds of questions, students will throw darts on the board for points.

Dart Throw Scoring Board -20 points if the dart does not land inside the square or if it falls on the ground No points if the dart lands in the white region 100 10 70 50 30 100 20 100 20 70 50 30 20 10 30

Question 1 Stratified Define the following as either convenience, cluster, systematic, or stratified sampling: Population Split into boys/girls Sample

Question 2 Define the following as either convenience, cluster, systematic, or stratified sampling: Systematic

Question 3 Define the following as either convenience, cluster, systematic, or stratified sampling: Cluster

Question 4 Determine whether the information below represents a random sample, simple random sample, both, or neither. 1. Ms. Yedinak stands outside of Rm. 184 and asks the first 10 OHS students that pass by what their favorite band is. 2. Ms. Rehak assigns every student at OHS a number and randomly selected 10 of those numbers. Ms. Rehak then asks those 10 students what their favorite band is. 1. Neither2. Both

Question 5 1. Discrete2. Discrete3. Continuous You and your friends go to Portillos. Determine whether the information below represents discrete or continuous data. 1. The number of hotdogs sold on one given day. 2. The number of cups of soda sold on one given day. 3. The amount of soda poured into cups sold on one given day.

Question 6 Determine whether the information below represents quantitative or categorical data. 1. The number of dogs families in Oswego own. 2. The types of dogs families in Oswego own. 3. The dogs’ microchip identification numbers. 1. Quantitative2. Categorical3. Categorical

Question 7 1. Parameter 2. Statistic Determine whether the information represents a parameter or a statistic. 1. 2 of the 50 states in the United States do not use the “majority rule” for their Electoral College votes. 2. Mr. Llorens surveyed 5 OHS math teachers and all 5 thought Mr. Llorens should rename his dog “Kyle”.

Question 8 The wording of the question is biased and tends to encourage negative responses. The sample size of 20 is too small. Finally, survey respondents are self- selected instead of being selected by the newspaper. The Newport Chronicle ran a survey by asking readers to call in their response to this question: “Do you support the development of atomic weapons that could kill millions of innocent people?” It was reported that 20 readers responded and 87% said “no” while 13% said “yes.” Identify 3 major flaws.

Question 9 Gallup, a private polling company that conducts its own independent polls recently conducted a pet ownership study in the U.S. In order to obtain these results, Gallup conducted telephone interviews. Here is the information they found. 1.What is the context of the numbers presented? 2.Who was the source of the data? Are they reliable? 3.What sampling method was used to obtain this data? 4.What conclusions can you draw from this data?

Dart Throw Scoring Board -20 points if the dart does not land inside the square or if it falls on the ground No points if the dart lands in the white region 100 10 70 50 30 100 20 100 20 70 50 30 20 10 30
