Absolute Monarchy Ruler (inherited by blood or marriage) who governs alone and is not restrained by laws, a constitution, or customs, believes they are ruled by a mandate from God. *Power is acquired by inheritance *Often times a monarch will be influenced by social classes *Source of authority is always the King/Queen/Emperor
Constitutional Monarchy Monarchy in which the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation. *The head of state is the monarch, however, most of the power is held by the Parliament (Legislative Branch). The Prime Minister is either appointed or elected, but in most cases will be the source of power.
Presidential Democracy Also called a congressional system, is a system of government where an executive branch exists and is separate from the legislature. Power is acquired either directly or indirectly through elections Head of state is the President Source of authority is the people *Power is separated between branches
Dictatorship Absolute power is in one person. Often taken by force. *Abuse of power *Source of authority is one person, the dictator
Theocracy A government run by a religious dictator. *Country’s laws come from the religious affiliation of its leader.
