2 Federalism Review SWBAT explain how power is divided between the national and state governments

3 Warm-Up #7 How much freedom do you really have at home, school, etc.? What kinds of important decisions do you get to make at home? Whose decision is supreme in your house or in your school?

4 Federalism Remember the 6 basic principles of government? What is federalism? It is the division of power between national and state governments

5 As we discussed, the Constitution gives some powers only to the state governments “…powers not delegated to the U.S…. are reserved to the States…”

7 The Constitution gives some powers only to the national government

8 The Constitution also instructs national and state governments to share powers- these powers are called concurrent powers

9 What happens when national law conflicts with state law? The Constitution (national law) is SUPREME

10 Cooperation between national and state governments If a state cannot handle a natural disaster, the national government (FEMA) steps in

11 Federal Grants for everyday things Sometimes the national government gives money to the states to help pay for schools, roads, health care, etc.
