For the most accurate measurement, an ethanol free gasoline sample from the same stock as the ethanol/gas sample to be analyzed can be used to zero out any differences in gasoline makeup Zeroing on Gasoline: Background Measurement

Since ethanol free gasoline is not always available, the ethanol can be extracted from the gasoline in order to zero the analyzer Zeroing on Gasoline: Background Measurement

To extract the ethanol, the gasoline sample is mixed with a salt water solution which collects the ethanol, leaving ethanol free gasoline Zeroing on Gasoline: Background Measurement

If ethanol free gasoline of the same type to be measured is available, this step can be skipped. Note: If the gasolines to be analyzed are similar in chemical makeup, or if the measurement requirements allow up to a 1% error, zeroing can be done on a clean crystal without the base gasoline or the extraction step. Zeroing on Gasoline: Background Measurement

Salt Water for Extraction 1.Add 1 liter of distilled water to container. 2.Add 20g (1 tablespoon) of sodium chloride (table salt) to the water. The exact amount is not important. to the water. The exact amount is not important. 3. Stir the solution until all the salt is dissolved Note: This solution can be made in any quantity as long as the ratio of water to salt is kept similar. Background Measurement

Ethanol Extraction: 1. Add 2 parts salt water and 1 part gasoline of sample to be analyzed to glass container (~ 10 ml of salt water to 5 ml gasoline) 2. Cover the container and shake for 30 seconds 3. Allow the solution to settle (~ 30 seconds) There should now be two layers in the container. The top layer is ethanol free gasoline 4. There should now be two layers in the container. The top layer is ethanol free gasoline

Clean the crystal with a delicate task wipe cleaning from one end of the crystal to the other Background Measurement

Using a pipette, carefully remove approximately 2 ml of zero sample from the top layer of the extracted gasoline. Do not allow the pipette to come in contact with the bottom layer. Background Measurement

Apply the sample so that the entire crystal is wet and close the stainless steel cover Background Measurement

Press and hold the ZERO button until the display reads bAL Recall ZERO CAL RUN bAL Background Measurement

Recall ZERO CAL RUN 1.267 A multiplier value to 3 decimal places will be displayed when zero is established The actual value is only of interest when reporting problems to the factory Background Measurement

Recall ZERO CAL RUN 0.0 Background Measurement Press RUN The display should read 0.0 + 0.2 If not, repeat the zero process

Ensure that the gasoline sample to be analyzed is the same as the sample used in the background collection Sample Analysis

Apply approximately 2ml of the fuel sample ensuring that the entire crystal is wet Sample Analysis

Close cover to keep volatiles from evaporating Sample Analysis

Recall ZERO CAL RUN 0.0 Press RUN Sample Analysis

Recall ZERO CAL RUN 5.7 Sample Analysis After 15 seconds the result is displayed

Clean the crystal with a delicate task wipe cleaning from one end of the crystal to the other The InfraCal is ready for the next sample Sample Analysis
