2 March 2008 / Nursing Assistant Monthly Falls and Fall Prevention Falls: a serious health risk Can cause serious injury, even death –In 2004, more than 14,800 deaths of older adults occurred in the U.S. due to falls Can create anxiety and fear of another fall –Many people limit their activities for fear of falling

3 March 2008 / Nursing Assistant Monthly Falls and Fall Prevention What causes falls in older adults? Resident: Muscle weakness and gait problems Changes in level of alertness Medication side effects Example: dizziness, drowsiness Pain Example: foot pain, hip or back pain Confusion Visual problems

Restraints are not the answer –They actually increase the risk of injury We need to focus not only on fall prevention but also injury prevention Examples: keep beds in low position, mat on floor next to bed

7 March 2008 / Nursing Assistant Monthly Falls and Fall Prevention Watch for AND REPORT changes in the resident’s condition, such as: Daytime sleepiness Evidence of pain Examples: wincing with movement, refusing care, poor appetite Unsteady gait, foot discomfort, poorly fitting shoes Weakness Hazards in the environment The CNA’s role

8 March 2008 / Nursing Assistant Monthly Falls and Fall Prevention Tips for caregivers Be sure residents have items they are likely to need nearby Pay close attention to toileting needs; many residents fall trying to get to the bathroom Help residents stay strong by assisting with ambulation when that is part of the nursing care plan Anticipate the resident’s needs
