4 The Food Guide Pyramid The USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid is based on what Americans eat and what nutrients are in these foods. It can help people make the best food choices. Lets see if you can fill in the pyramid?

6 How well did you do? The food pyramid is important when deciding what to eat in order to maintain a healthy body. How do we know what’s in the food we eat? One way is to read the Label

9 Focus on fruits. Vary your veggies. Get your calcium-rich foods. Make half your grains whole. Go lean with protein. Know the limits on fats, salt, and sugars. Key food group messages from the Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid:

12 Reading food labels Food labels inform the consumer of the ingredients that make up the food. Ingredients are listed on the label in order, from the one used in the largest amount to the one used in the smallest amount. The list must include everything that was used to make the food.

16 Food Labels  First Two Lines: –Tells you what’s in the box. –There are two servings in this box. –…and each serving is a cup.

17 Food Labels  The next two Lines: –Tells us how many calories –…and how many of those calories come from fat. –The average person needs about 2000 calories, no more than 600 should come from fat.

18 Food Labels  The next part tells you about fat, cholesterol, and sodium (salt).  Saturated fat and trans fats are especially bad.  Too much of these can lead to heart disease.  Pick foods that are low in this area.

19 Food Labels  The last part shows you how many vitamins and minerals are in the food.  Less than 5 is not a good source.  10 -20 is good.  20 and above is excellent.
