Collecting and Analyzing Student Behavior Data Nadia K. Sampson & Dr. Kelsey Morris University of Oregon

 Introductions  Collecting Data: PBIS Applications Overview  Analyzing Data ◦ Big questions ◦ School-wide ◦ Student level ◦ District, Regional, or State level aggregate data

 School/Building ◦ SWIS User ◦ CICO-SWIS User ◦ ISIS-SWIS Coordinator or User ◦ Entered survey data in PBIS Assessment  District, Regional, Program, or State ◦ Implementer or Coach ◦ Manager or Evaluator ◦ PBIS Assessment Coordinator ◦ PBIS Evaluation User ◦ SWIS Suite Facilitator  Others?

PBIS Applications Overview

SWIS Suite SWIS Suite is a set of tools designed to assist school personnel to monitor progress within multi-tiered systems of support. ◦ SWIS (School-wide Information System) ◦ CICO-SWIS (Check In Check Out SWIS) ◦ ISIS-SWIS (Individual Student Information System)

PBIS Assessment PBIS Assessment is designed to assist in high-fidelity, sustained implementation of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (SWPBIS). * Tool to be included in future version

PBIS Evaluation PBISEval is designed to assist state, regional, and district leadership teams to evaluate the breadth, depth, and impact of their SWPBIS efforts using data collected.

 What information do we already collect?  How will we use the information we have?  What do we need to make good decisions on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule?  What do we need to make good decisions on a quarterly or annual schedule?  What is possible and what is doable?

Data-Based Decision Making

When analyzing data, here’s what we want to know: 1. Are we doing what we said we would do? 2. Is it making a positive difference in student outcomes?

 What are our systems and procedures for collecting data?  What are our systems and procedures for analyzing and sharing data?  How are teams organized to use data for decision-making?

 TIPS information assists teams in getting organized and using data for decision making.  TIPS Materials: ◦ Go to www.uoecs.orgwww.uoecs.org ◦ Click on Materials ◦ From the drop-down menu choose: “TIPS Training Team Curriculum”  Direct Link: ◦ http://www.uoecs.org/index.php/component/jdownloads/view category/19-tips-team-training-curriculum?Itemid=54 http://www.uoecs.org/index.php/component/jdownloads/view category/19-tips-team-training-curriculum?Itemid=54

Analyzing school-wide data

Sample of Data Sources  PBIS Assessment data  SWIS data  Attendance records  Academic data  Anecdotal data/interviews  Other?

Teams can:  Review current implementation data for the school year across tiers of implementation. ◦ Annual assessments (SET, SAS) ◦ Progress-monitoring (TIC, MATT) ◦ Outcome Surveys (Safety Survey)  Discuss implications and action planning.

 Decisions about Evaluation Tools ◦ Which tools answer your district/schools’ evaluation questions?  Decisions about Evaluation Timeline ◦ When/how often will you administer the tools?  Decisions about Evaluation Reporting ◦ How will you report outcomes to schools and to the District? ◦ How often will you report?

 SWIS Reports  CICO-SWIS School-wide Reports  ISIS-SWIS School-wide Reports

SWPBIS Team (Year 2 of Tier I implementation) at monthly progress-monitoring meeting Team will analyze:  SWIS: SWIS Summary,Drill Down  PBIS Assessment: Recent TIC and SAS data

SW Tier II/III team (IPBS) end-of-year planning Team will analyze:  SWIS: (Coming soon) End-of-Year Report/Triangle Report  ISIS-SWIS: School-Wide Report  CICO-SWIS: Points by Student  MATT or BAT Report

Analyzing individual student data

 SWIS referral data  CICO-SWIS point data  ISIS-SWIS data  IEP/504/BSP plans  Attendance records  Academic records/grades  Anecdotal data/interviews  Other?

Brian is a student who receives academic and behavioral Tier III supports. The Student Support Team for Brian Bender is meeting to review Brian’s progress. Team will review/analyze:  Grades  Behavior Support Plan  Fidelity of Plan implementation data  Assignment Completion data  Use of “Ask for Help” routine data  Anecdotal data from parents and staff
