1 Basic Vocabulary Math is a language, learn the words!

2 “Statement” A meaningful assertion that is either true or false. x + 3 = 5 The most common “statement” is an equation.

3 “Expression” A name or a symbol for a number 4 x + 3 3x + 4y - 2 Do you see an equal sign in an expression?

4 “Equivalent Equation” An equation that means the same thing as the first equation. thing as the first equation. x = 2 2x = 4

16 “Identity Element” for Addition The number that you can add to any number and have a sum that equals the original addend. (5 + 0 = 5) It sounds like “zero” to me!

17 “Identity Element” for Multiplication The number that you can multiply to any number and have a product that equals the original factor. (5 x 1 = 5) It sounds like “one” to me!

18 “Additive Inverse” The number that you can add to an addend to get zero as the sum. 5 + (-5) = 0 5 + (-5) = 0 Think of the additive inverse of a number as the “opposite” or “negative” of the number. What is the additive inverse of -22?

19 “Multiplicative Inverse” The number that you can multiply a factor by to get one as the product. We also call this the “reciprocal” of a number. What is the multiplicative inverse of -1/7?
