3 Review  Can you answer these questions?  What are the five major religions? Can you put them in order of creation?  What is each religion’s holy book, founder, and date of origin?  What are the five pillars of Islam?  What is the founding story of Buddhism?  What are the similarities between Christianity and Buddhism?

4 Hinduism  The first world religion  Created by the gods (polytheistic) at an unknown time  Religious stories and the founding principals of Hinduism are written in the Vedas  Hindus must be born in India, the Hindi homeland  Hinduism is not only a religion, it contains the social structure and way of life that all Hindus must live by

5 Judaism  Founded by Abraham and Moses  Second world religion to be created  Religious stories can be found in the Torah  Very small today, only the dominant religion in a few places  Jews have a long history with genocide, and were the primary target of the most famous genocide: the Holocaust

6 Buddhism  The holy book they have is named :  Triptaka  The Creator of the Buddhism was :  Siddthartha Gautama  The date that they started this religion was :  Around 550 B.C  It is said that anybody that rubs the Buddha’s stomach will have good luck economically

7 Buddhism’s Founding Story Buddhism began when a prince, Siddhartha Gautama, saw all of the suffering in the world, and sought out a way to minimize suffering in the world. He meditated for days until he came up with a solution. He realized the Four Noble Truths. The first one states that life is full of pain and suffering. The second states that the cause of suffering is nonvirtue (negative mindsets). The third states that the only cure for suffering is to overcome nonvirtue. The fourth states that the Eightfold Path must be followed to overcome nonvirtue. The Eightfold path is: 1: Right views, 2: Right aspirations, 3: Right speech, 4: Right conduct, 5: Right livelihood, 6: Right effort, 7: Right mindfulness, and 8: Right contemplation

8 Christianity  The fourth world religion to be formed  Most popular religion in the world today  Religious stories are contained in the Bible  Monotheistic (one god)  Many holy wars were fought over Christianity  Some similar ideas and stories with Judaism  One of the reasons North America and South America were colonized  One of the most famous symbols of Christianity is Jesus being crucified

9 Islam The holy book they used to guide them self was the Quran. The creator of the Islam religion was Muhammed. It was the date that every thing begin around 600 A.D The five pillars are: 1: State that you believe in Allah 2: Pray five times a day 3: Every year give to charity 4: Make a pilgrimage to Meccah at least once in your life 5: Fast during Ramadan
