Metric System Developed by the French in the 1790’s Official name is système international ďunites or SI All other major countries use the metric system Follows a decimal number system based on ten

Standard Units of Measurement Length = Meter Mass = Grams Volume = Cubic centimeter or liter Density = grams over/per cubic centimeters Temperature = Celsius Degrees

Metric Prefixes and Values PREFIXSYMBOLUNIT VALUE kilo k1,000 hecto h100 deka da10 meter/liter/gram m/l/g1.0 deci d0.1 centic0.01 milli m0.001

Mass Notes Mass is the amount of matter in an object Everything has some mass Mass and weight are the same on the earth’s surface Weight is effected by gravity, mass stays constant A balance is an instrument used to measure mass

Rules for a Triple Beam Balance 1. Always carry with two hands on the base 2. Zero the balance before using it (every time) 3. Never place anything that can hurt or stick to the pan directly on it. 4. When finishing with the balance move the largest rider to the right. (parking the rider)

Volume Def.- The amount of space an object takes up or occupies Units of measurement- –Liters/ Milliliters l/ml used to measure liquid -Cubic centimeters cc/cm³ can be used for any volume.

Volume continued Measuring Volumes Regularly shaped solid measure length x width x height Liquid pour into a measuring device like a graduated cylinder and measure at the bottom of the meniscus* Irregularly shaped solid (rock/bolt/etc..) use displacement* in a graduated cylinder or overflow can *displacement is when an object takes up the space of a liquid and the liquid is forced to rise *meniscus is the curve that most liquids make in a graduated cylinder and you measure from the bottom of the curve

Density Density is the amount of matter in a certain amount of space. The standard units of measurement are grams g cubic centimeters cm³ Density = Mass divided by the volume

Temperature Definition the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment (corresponding to its molecular activity) The standard unit of measurement is Celsius degrees ºC Freezing 0ºC Boiling 100ºC

Graphing Notes - A graph must always have a title -The X and Y axis must always be labeled (X= horizontal Y=vertical) - Time or the variable that changes the most consistently is always along the X axis - You should always use as much space on the graph as possible -Graphing Discrepancy is an unexpected result that requires further investigation

Graphing Notes Cont.- Line graphs show the change of something over time Bar Graphs compare similar items or data that have no effect on each other
