IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 1 IPv6 Strategies (Early Draft) --- from Japanese experiences --- IPv6 World Congress Takashi Arano Intec Netcore, Inc.

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 2 Split Deployment Strategy Infrastructure deployment Application/Solution deployment –Strategies for these two may be very different. Two Options 1.Try to deploy simultaneously 2.Infrastructure first, application/solution next Japanese experience tells option2 works. We are just not sure if option1 works or not. Do you think other countries go in a same way?

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 3 Infrastructure Strategy Let’s discuss… Ex. –Explaining the followings in their business terms and context Address shortage risk Better manageability More extensibility and scalability Potentiality of (managed) P2P services. Cost comparison Case studies of Japanese carriers and ISPs Considering 3 deployment models –More…

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 4 Application/Solution Strategy Main and only issue is how to let or help innovations happen. Field Trial Commercial Deployment Commercial Deployment Commercial Deployment timeline Collaboration Info sharing Sometimes done in gov.proj. Somehow academic Competitive With some collaboration Private efforts Business Innovation Lab Trial

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 5 Application/Solution Strategy (II) Who should make innovations mainly? –Innovations happen only when systems meet user requirements. Remember that most users don’t care about IPv4/v6. –So probably it is not us but someone in that application field. –We, IPv6 experts should be helper.

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 6 Application/Solution Strategy (III) DO NOT try to control innovation. Just let business/application people do free. Our advice or help would be useful, though. Duplicated efforts by different people are necessary because same technology and even same business model haven’t lead to same business result, from historical observation.

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 7 Application/Solution Strategy (IV) Which application area comes first? Less chicken & egg problem More advantageous, less disadvantageous –Ex. Doesn’t rely on IPv6 Internet … Should be more…

IPv6 Strategy www.ipv6forum.com IPv6 Forum 8 Just Information I missed yesterday IPv6 Deployment Guideline –English version available from IPv6 Promotion Council’s site –For Large enterprises, small enterprises, ISPs, homes, etc. –Including case studies with cost analysis IPv6 Solution Guideline –Coming Soon –IPv6 deployment show cases for solution oriented approach IPv6 Deployment Metrics –Measured in Japan –Published soon
