2 South Dakota is called the Mount Rushmore State.

3 Mount Rushmore Before After It is located in Keystone, South Dakota.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore. Began sculpting them in 1927, but didn’t finish til 1939. 2 million people visit each year. Before After

4 Mount Rushmore It has the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

5 George Washington He was the first President of the US. He was Martha.
He died on December 14, 1799. He is on the $1.00 bill.

6 Thomas Jefferson He was 3rd President of the US.
He wrote the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire .

7 Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt
He was the 26th President of the US. He was home schooled then later went to Harvard College. His lifelong interest in zoology was formed at age seven upon seeing a dead seal at a local market. After obtaining the seal's head, the young Roosevelt and two of his cousins formed what they called the "Roosevelt Museum of Natural History". Learning the rudiments of taxidermy, he filled his makeshift museum with many animals that he killed or caught, studied, and prepared for display.

8 Abraham Lincoln He was the 16th President of the US.
He wore a tall black hat. He was during the Civil War times. He was born in a one room cabin. He is on the penny (1¢).

9 Many people are farmers
Many people are farmers. Because of the sun and its rich land, farms cover much of South Dakota.

The capital of South Dakota is Pierre.

11 South Dakota SD The abbreviation of South Dakota is SD.
The states that border SD: west (Montana and Wyoming, north (North Dakota), east (Minnesota and Iowa), south ( Nebraska).

12 Badlands in South Dakota
The Badlands have clay, iron, ash and silt mixed into the land. Not good for farming.

13 Black Hills Not a lot of forests in South Dakota.
Most of them are in the Black Hills.

14 Black Blizzards In the 1930’s dust storms were so heavy they were called black blizzards.

15 Droughts South Dakota has had many droughts.
A drought is a long period of time with no rain or snow.

16 Gold In 1874 gold was found in South Dakota.

17 Work Many people are farmers. They grow oats, rye, sunflower seeds and keep bees that make honey. They work in hospitals, sell things, make food, tractors and jewelry from the gold.

18 Dinosaurs There are more than 10,000 duckbilled dinosaurs buried in South Dakota. They died 65 million years ago.

19 Tourists Many people visit South Dakota each year.
A tourist is a person who visits other places for fun!
