1 Marriage, Sexuality and Power in New Mexico, 1500-1846

2   Currently at the University of Chicago  Rather than only looking to the Spanish for answers, the point was to examine how the belief system of the Pueblo Indians facilitated their own conquest Professor Ramon Gutierrez

3   The Pueblo myth begins with Tsichtinako, or “Thought Woman”, who nursed two sisters born in the earth  One was named Nautsiti, mother of the Sun Clan, and the other was named Iatiku, mother of the Corn Clan Pueblo Origin Myth

4   A black katsina named Estevanico advised that white katsina would soon arrive  Fray Marcos de Niza discovered that the residents of Cibola had Estevanico killed as a witch Cibola & the Seven Cities of Gold

5   Law was exercised through the governor  Spanish settlers with established households ( vecinos ) consisted of persons who had rights to Indian tribute ( encomenderos ) and persons who did not ( moradores ) Opposing Forces

6   August 11, 1680, the first night of the new moon, was chosen as the date for the revolt  Natives knew the settlers would be most vulnerable to attack right before the triennial supply caravan arrived from Mexico City Pueblo Revolt of 1680

7   After the reconquista, the role of intermediary between the Pueblos and Spanish settlers shifted from the friars to the caciques and medicine men Reconquista
