Jesus on Evangelism/Missions (4:25-42)

John Piper “Missions is not the ultimate goal of the Church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever… It’s the goal of missions because in missions we simply aim to bring the nations into the white hot enjoyment of God’s glory…

John Piper …But worship is also the fuel of missions. Passion for God in worship precedes the offer of God in preaching. You can’t commend what you don’t cherish. Missionaries will never call out, “Let the nations be glad!” who cannot say from the heart, “I rejoice in the Lord…I will be glad and exult in thee, I will sing praise to thy name, O Most High” (Ps 104:34, 9:2)

Psalm 22:27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you

Jesus on Evangelism 1.Our Evangelism Must Confront People with Gospel Truth 2.Evangelism Flows Naturally from a Redeemed Heart 3.Evangelism is the Most Gratifying Thing A Believer Can Do 4.We Must Maintain an URGENCY for Evangelism & Missions 5.Missions is a Cooperative Effort

JOHN 4:25-26 The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."

The Progression (v. 9) – How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me (v. 12) – Are you greater than our father Jacob?... (v. 19) – "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet… (v. 25) – I know that Messiah is coming… (v. 29) – Can this be the Christ?"…

John 4:27-30 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you seek?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" They went out of the town and were coming to him.

JOHN 4:31-34 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him something to eat?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work

JOHN (5:36) – For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me (6:38) – For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me

JOHN (10:37-38) – If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." (17:4) – I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

JOHN 4:35-36 Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

Author Unknown “There is no way to describe hell. Nothing on earth can compare with it. No living person has any real idea of it. No madman in wildest flights of insanity ever beheld its horror. No man in delerium ever pictured a place so utterly terrible as this. No nightmare racing across a fevered mind ever produces a terror to match that of the mildest hell. No murder scene with splashed blood and oozing wound ever suggested a revulsion that could touch the borderlands of hell

Carl Henry The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time

JOHN 4:37-38 For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."

JOHN 4:39-42 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world."

Spurgeon If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for
