2 PREPARATION  WHO is the audience?  WHAT is the topic?  WHERE is talk to be given?  WHEN will you give talk?  WHY are you there?  HOW will you deliver talk?

3  Describe your topic in one sentence  What is your main idea?  Gather information – do the research  Write outline – with good closing  REHEARSE PRESENTATION [To friends, spouse or colleagues]  Refine talk and practice PREPARATION

4 USE TECHNOLOGY  Know the physical environment  PowerPoint or other software  Projector  Video  Transparencies / overhead projector  Get training on color, letter size, layout

6 USE OF VISUALS  Watch out for too much information  Visuals must connect with audience  If you do not need visuals, DON’T

7 THE PRESENTATION  Get some rest  Stay away from coffee, etc.  Make eye contact  Voice important – vary the pace  Jokes, no // humor, yes  Connect with audience – away from lectern  Involve the audience – unless at council  Handouts?????????

8 COUNCIL MEMOS Keep information simple – one page. Have someone read before you send. Avoid slang, jargon, acronyms. Direct to basic level of understanding. Are you making recommendation? Use tables & charts to simplify. Avoid use of emotional words. Avoid interpretation of the public interest. Try to anticipate questions reader may ask.
