Warm-up #8 Give me an example of a simile. Give me an example of a metaphor. How many different types of metaphors are there? What are the different types called?

Simile The comparison of two unlike things using connecting words such as like, as, than, or resembles

Simile Examples She is as pretty as a rose. He is dead as a doorknob. That child is as curious as a cat.

Metaphors The comparison of two unlike things with no connection words used Four types  Direct Metaphors  Implied Metaphors  Extended Metaphors  Mixed Metaphors

Direct Metaphors A metaphor that says that something is something else. Example: “I was a lonely cloud.”

Implied Metaphors A metaphor not explicitly stated or obvious that compares two things by using adjectives that commonly describe one thing, but are used to describe another comparing the two. Example- What are we comparing:  Golden bake skin

Extended Metaphors Metaphors that are developed over several lines or throughout an entire poem Example: Fireworks- Amy Lowell You hate me and I hate you And we are so polite, we two! But whenever I see you, I burst apart And scatter the sky with my blazing heart. It spits and sparkles in the stars and balls, Buds into roses – and flares, and falls. (There is more to this poem… you can find it on page 550 in your Elements of Literature book.)

Mixed Metaphors A metaphor that is an inconsistent combination of two or more metaphors. Usually unintentional and often humorous Example: “It’s no use closing the barn door after the milk has been spilled” Why is this a Mixed Metaphor?

examples Men's words are bullets, that their enemies take up and make use of against them.“ "The rain came down in long knitting needles.“ “Love is a rose” “He stepped up to the plate and took the bull by the horns.” “You are my sun.” “She barked her command.” “Remorse sits in my stomach like a piece of stale bread.” “The Budget Committee hammered at the Treasury secretary for three hours.”

More Examples Two wrecks on a raft.” at a restaurant “You’re as quiet as a baby.” “Like peas in a pod”

Your turn… Write one simile or metaphor using an everyday object. Example: “The computer monitor stared back at her with an unfriendly, unblinking eye.” Things you can use to get you started (try to use some ideas of your own as well): Backpack Toaster Beach Quarterback School
