2 Taking “Self” Out of Righteousness Luke 18:9-14

3 Luke 18:9 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt…

4 Luke 18:10-12 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

5 Luke 18:13 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

6 Luke 18:14 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

7 The Markers of a Self-justifier
Possess a system of ethics which you believe if kept makes you good. Possess a spirit of contempt for those who do not value your system.

8 2 Self –Justifying Systems
What’s Your System? 2 Self –Justifying Systems If I keep the rules and avoid sin, I will be a good person. (Conservatives/Pharisees) If I love and accept others, I will be a good person. (Progressives/Herodians)

9 Self Test How do you react?

10 Do you have contempt for others?
The moral are in and the immoral are out. The open minded are in and the closed minded are out. We are never more like the Pharisee than when we thank God we are not like the Pharisee. - Charles Spurgeon

11 Luke 18:14 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Use the law rightly – to identify sin. Let God justify you – receive grace.

12 Luke 18:13 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
