7 Midnight At midnight, after an evening’s drinking, a driver may, for example have consumed 8 pints of standard beer (approx 20 units) into their system. More if premium or strong beer. 7.30am On getting up, there could be up to 130mg still in your system. Therefore, a driver is unfit to drive. 8 Alcohol takes effect quickly but wears off slowly Midday By Lunchtime, elimination has continued to around 80mg. You could be over the legal limit. 8.00pm All the alcohol is not eliminated until around 8pm, 20 hours after it was consumed. It is impossible to speed up alcohol elimination. Neither a shower, nor a cup of coffee, nor other ways of “sobering up” will help. It just takes time.
