1. Chapter 11 Ancient Egypt-

2.  The first period of Ancient Egypt is known as the Old Kingdom.  The pharaoh was the king, and believed to be a god. They believed that the land in Egypt belonged to the gods.

3.  As trade increased in Ancient Egypt, population grew.  As population grew, social classes developed.

4. Social Classes: Pharaoh - the king Nobles - Officials and Priests Scribes and Craftspeople - produced goods Farmers, Servants, and Slaves – most of their population

5.  Egyptians practice polytheism, or the study of more than one god.  They had a god for just about every aspect of life.

6. Ra/Re -sun god Osiris - god of the underworld Horus- sky god Isis-god of magic Thoth -god of wisdom Geb - Earth god

7.  Their afterlife, or life after death, was very important to them.  A person’s life force is known as their ka  A ka was the spirit that left the body when a person died. It was believed to need the same things in death as they had in life.

9.  Pyramids were huge temples built to honor the pharaohs. Ancient Egyptians believed that pharaohs controlled the afterlife too, so they built huge pyramids to honor them and make them happy.

10.  Pyramids are an example of engineering, the application of scientific knowledge put to practical use.  The building of the pyramids took a huge work force.
