Light is a form of energy we detect with our eyes.

A tool used to separate white light into different colors is a prism.

The colors that make up white light are called the visible spectrum.

Light rays bend as they pass from one material to another.

Light travels more slowly through denser materials.

A lens is a tool used to refract, or bend, light. Give some examples of lenses you see often. Share with your partner.

A lens that bends light outward, making objects look smaller, is called a concave lens. A lens that bend light toward its center, making objects look bigger, is called a convex lens.

The lens of an eye focuses images on the retina. The optic nerve sends images to the brain.

Reflection occurs when light strikes and then bounces off a surface. Smooth, shiny surfaces, such as mirrors, reflect the most light.

The law of reflection involves two light rays; the incoming ray and the outgoing ray. The angels of both rays are equal.

Opaque material blocks light, transparent material allows light to pass through, and translucent material allows some light to pass through but scatters it in different directions.

Translucent Opaque

For privacy, people use opaque materials.

Dark colored clothing absorbs most of the light that falls on them, while light colored clothing reflects most of the light. Wearing dark colored clothing makes a person feel hotter in the summer. Why do you think you should avoid wearing black clothing on a hot, sunny day?
