Letters of Recommendation

Who to Ask Check the requirements for each college Good Choices: 1.A Counselor 2.A Teacher 3.A Coach 4.Community Service 5.Employer

Tips Set the deadline on the Student Data Sheet for a Letter of Recommendation for 1-2 weeks before the letter is due to the scholarship committee, college, or employer. This will give you time to mail or hand-carry the letter. Fill out Student Data Sheet completely!

Tips If the writer is supposed to mail the letter somewhere, provide a stamped addressed envelope. Politely check with the writer to be certain the letter was mailed. (“How’s my letter coming? Do you need any more information?”).

Tips Ask for a copy of the letter for your files. Be aware that sometimes an application will specifically state that you waive your rights to see the letter. Make copies of all applications before you submit them.

Tips Choose teachers who know you well. If you have not participated in classroom discussions or stood out in some way, the teacher may have a hard time writing a good recommendation.

Tips Write a short thank-you note to the person who writes you a letter of recommendation. Then another thank- you note if you get into college, get the scholarship, or get the job, let the writer know!
