1 6/4/12 Rock Cycle 2 Objective:
Students will be able to model the rest of the rock cycle using wax. Do Now: What will happen to the car when the hand is removed? Describe which way the car will move. Tell if there is acceleration (pos. or neg.) or constant speed. Tell if the forces are balanced or unbalanced 2 N 3 N

2 Speed, Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Velocity = distance / time Balanced forces are equal and opposite Unbalanced forces are not equal An object speeding up is positively accelerating An object slowing down is negatively accelerating An object going at a constant speed has balanced forces An object accelerating (positively or negatively) has unbalanced forces Friction is the force that acts in the opposite direction of a moving object and slows it down.

3 Think/Pair/Share: Friday we were able to turn a sedimentary rock into a metamorphic rock. How did we do this?

4 An igneous rock is a rock that forms from melted rock.
Write/Pair/Share: How could we turn the crayon “metamorphic rock” into an “igneous rock?” Let’s Share!!!!!

5 Let’s all watch as I put an aluminum foil “boat” in hot water
Be ready to make at least 2 observations.

6 Draw the “igneous rock” and label it igneous rock.
How did we turn the wax “metamorphic rock” into an “igneous rock”? How could a “metamorphic rock” turn into an igneous rock in real life? How could we turn the wax “igneous rock” back into “sediments”?

How are sedimentary rocks formed? Sedimentary rocks are formed when rock is weathered into sediments and turned to rock by pressure and/or natural cementing.

How are metamorphic rocks formed? Metamorphic rocks are formed when heat and pressure changes a rock into a new type of rock.

12 Rock Cycle Notes Think/pair/share/write:
Is there a set order for how rocks change from one rock to another? There is no set order in the rock cycle: any rock can turn into any other kind of rock, or into a different type of the same type of rock. (Example: An igneous rock can be melted and made into a different igneous rock.)
