2 Children and Resilience  Building resilience is the ability to bounce back and adapt to change or difficult life events.  Normal for children to see change as stressful and scary.  Helping a child to keep things in perspective and understand why change is an inevitable part of life, will help them navigate and bounce back from tough times and move forward. 4 Your Child Needs  You to take care of yourself  Unconditional love and honest, yet age-appropriate communication  Family plans and traditions to continue  A healthy lifestyle  Firm routines and structure in the home C-4R2MR Module C

5 Strategies for Parenting from Afar  Involve children in communication plan  Post cards, e-mails, letters, newspaper clippings, phone calls  Take note of birthdays, special occasions  Ask about their friends, activities, school, their pet  Make recordings of parent reading favourite stories C-5R2MR Module C

6 Mental Health Continuum Model  Watch for changes in your children along the continuum  Expect some reacting (yellow) changes in mood and behaviour as child adjusts to separation  Seek assistance for mood and behaviours that continue for more than a few weeks, get worse instead of getting better, or are concerning to you as a parent ILL HEALTHY REACTINGINJURED C-6R2MR Module C
