John Dalton By: Courtney Banning 10-20-07 Science/Core 2-3

Introduction Birth date: Sep. 6,1766 Birthplace: Eaglesfield, Cumberland Nationality: English Death: July 27,1844 at Manchester, England Full name: John Dalton Fields of science: Meteorology& Chemistry

What made him Famous? He came up with the atomic theory. (Which is the theory that everything is made up of small particles called atoms and molecules.) One of his papers he wrote concluded that when heated all gases expand equally. The fist table of atomic weights was in one of his papers. The atomic theory was first explicitly stated by Dalton at a Royal Institution lecture in December 1803. He was the first person ever to scientifically describe color blindness.

Things that made them Famous He was color blind and took advantage of it. He wrote many famous papers on chemistry and meteorology. The mixtures of gases he created to come up with the atomic theory.

Impacts on Society The symbols for the molecules he found and wooden molecule shapes he made are found in high schools and collages today. These things can help students who want have a field chemistry, and to know more about the universe. He also helped with finding more about color blindness. This way people will know how to help people with it.

Additional Things I thought it was interesting how he didn’t let the fact that he was severely color blind get in the way. My research said that the only color he could see was yellow! One of his famous quotes was, “This paper will no doubt be found interesting by those who take an interest in it.” He did not have a specific work area because, for one he always had his journal for recording data with him, and since he had do travel a lot for lectures and what not I think he just worked at the closes lab.

Other Interesting Facts He was teaching at his village school by the age of 12. He was a Quaker his whole life. He had three strokes within about four years before he finally died. He had a brother named Jonathan and a sister named Mary. He was never married. At the time people did not record birth dates so we are not exactly sure when he was born.
