1 “…Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt

2 On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese airplanes made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. (U.S. naval base)

3 More than 2,400 people lost their lives. Many ships and airplanes were destroyed.

4 Americans were outraged! President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan the next day.

5 Iwo Jima One famous WWII battle took place at a small Pacific island named Iwo Jima. The island was important because it was close to Japan and a good place for American planes to land. Iwo Jima = Pacific island close to Japan that Americans could land their planes to attack Japan.

6 To protect the island, the Japanese had built a network of underground tunnels and traps. A fierce battle took place after U.S. troops invaded the island in February 1945. When the U.S. Marines finally reached the highest point on the island, the raised the American flag in victory.
