Streams & Springs: Ideas for Bi-national Projects Bi-national Environmental Flows and Ecosystem Services Workshop  Engage water users (e.g., agricultural, municipal), water and land managers, conservation practitioners, and scientists in developing innovative solutions to water scarcity in a rapidly changing climate. Themes:  Quantification, water management and securing water for native ecosystems  Emphasis on lessons learned from past environmental flow projects and how they can be applied to current  Foster effective collaboration and create a community of practice that bridges gaps between management needs and scientific information  Identify science gaps and adaptive management strategies that incorporate e-flows information to include ecosystem function and services Information Needs: o What datasets are valuable when making e-flow recommendations and which datasets fall short? (need to connect habitat use data to physical processes) o Need to talk about management and how the water for the environmental flow water is obtained; o Economic valuation of environmental flows (avoiding floods, estuary rebuilding) o Criteria for identifying priority watersheds; o Water use accounting for priority watersheds. o Link social data (health, demographics) and ecosystem services

Streams & Springs: Ideas for Bi-national Projects Bi-national pilot projects:  Take lessons learned from studied rivers and apply to current and future stream conservation efforts;  Springs inventory/monitoring  Impacts from aquifers – biologic/human impacts  How to best work with land owners  Conservation Planning Atlas for streams & springs conservation/restoration, including information about on- going projects/programs – who’s doing what where?

4. Invasive species – assessment, control, monitoring Monitoring migratory species & sharing the data Binational watershed classification at different scales  Surface and groundwater  Evaluate the projected effects of energy development, including water use Supply and demand studies/projections in Mexico & U.S., including climate change Bilateral exchange of restoration technology (streams, springs, closed basin systems) in both languages Identify needs/potential for rapid response teams for post- fire monitoring in riparian systems (CMQ 5) What information is needed to better conserve/manage streams and springs?
