Solid Waste Association of North America City of Brandon’s “Presentation on Methane Gas Utilization” May 14, 2009 – Winnipeg

Working and Funding Partnerships City of Brandon Federation of Canadian Municipalities Province of Manitoba – Green Manitoba WRAPP Samson Engineering – Initial Feasibility Study COMCOR – Pump Testing and Results

Basic Information of the Eastview Landfill Site In Operation Since 1977 Accepts both residential and commercial waste Receives approximately 41,000 Tonnes/Yr Capacity estimated to be reached in 2058

Results from the Samson Engineering Feasibility Study Indicated that there may be potential for development of methane gas. That the City of Brandon take it to the next step to verify numbers.

Basic COMCOR Findings The landfill is relatively young and methane gas utilization should be sustainable for 20 years or more. The monitoring numbers reflect that there is enough methane to provide equivalent electricity of 1.0 to a 1.5 MW. (Estimated that a 1.0 MW plant could supply enough electricity for 800 homes. It may be possible to expand in the future to a 4 or 5 MW plant.

Potential Uses Generate electricity. Direct Use for heating something rather than generating electricity as it may be more advantageous due to capital infrastructure cost. Alternative fuel for sanitation equipment. Minimum we should be flaring it off as methane gas is 21 times more harmful to the environment than CO2.

Expenditures to Date Samson Engineering Feasibility Study $82,963 Funded by FCM, WRAPP & City of Brandon. COMCOR Pump Test Report $57,525 Funded by City of Brandon & Province of Manitoba.

Where From Here? The City of Brandon is negotiating with COMCOR to develop the methane gas and sell and maintain the operation. They will pay a royalty to the City of Brandon. The city has no capital investment and is negotiating a 15 to 20 year agreement.
