2 What Was It?? A group of people that met briefly to consider options that included an economic boycott of British trade, publish a list of rights and grievances, and petition King George for redress of those grievances.

3 Who Was In It?? Twelve of the 13 colonies sent delegates Some of the most prominent people of the era were among the 55 delegates, including: George Washington, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, John Jay, and John Dickinson They were mostly people of social standing Many were initially unknown to one another and vast differences existed on some of the issues

5 When Was This?? September 5th, 1774 They got together in Philadelphia’s Carpenters Hall The idea of such a meeting was advanced a year earlier by Benjamin Franklin, but failed to gain support until after the Port of Boston was closed because of the Boston Tea Party

6 Why Did This Happen?? The Congress met briefly to consider options The options included: ~an economic boycott of British trade ~ publish a list of rights and grievances ~ a petition to King George for redress of those Grievances

7 What Were the Accomplishments? There were two accomplishments One; a compact among the colonies to boycott British goods beginning on December 1, 1774 The boycott was successful but it was cut off by the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War Second; to provide for a Second Continental Congress to meet on May 10, 1775
