1 PEER-MENTOR LEADERSHIP “EVERYDAY LEADERSHIP,” QUALITIES OF A MENTOR, AND CAROUSEL OF LESSONS LEARNED

2 PEER-MENTOR LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP 1. What are the qualities and roles associated with effective mentoring? 2. What is “everyday leadership”? 3. What wisdom/knowledge have you attained that you can share with mentees?

3 QUALITIES/ROLES OF A MENTOR 1. Think of a person who is not a relative who has acted as a mentor for you. 2. On one side of a card, write a list of qualities held by that person. 3. On the reverse of the card, write a list of roles held by him or her: guide, encourager, what else?

4 QUALITIES/ROLES OF A MENTOR 1. Please choose two of the qualities that you consider most valuable for mentoring. How might you use those traits in your work with a mentee? 2. Choose two roles that you consider valuable. How could you fill those roles in your mentoring work? What roles does a mentor NOT play?

5 TED TALK: DREW DUDLEY 1. Why was the “lollipop moment” a life-changing event for the student? 2. Has anyone ever created a “lollipop event” for you? 3. Have you created such an experience for someone else? 4. How could we use “everyday leadership” as mentors?

6 CAROUSEL OF LESSONS LEARNED 1. Please choose one of the posters displayed in the classroom. 2. What have you learned about this topic since starting at SMCC? What specific advice would you offer to a mentee on this subject? (Add one suggestion to each poster.)

7 CAROUSEL OF LESSONS LEARNED 1. Seek volunteers to choose one poster and be prepared to do the following: Summarize it for the class. What are the most valuable tips offered? How have you learned important lessons on these topics? How could you “model” this knowledge for your mentee?
