Like Confucianism, it taught proper behavior through methods such as discussion of what made human beings do bad things even if their basic nature was good. Unlike Confucianism, it emphasized spiritual matters that incorporated Buddhist and Daoist concepts about the meaning of life.

(pg. 178) A: Working in civil service means to work as a government official. In order to become a civil servant in the Song Dynasty a person had to pass a series of written examinations on Confucianism and related ideas. It was very hard because students had to memorize entire Confucian texts.

11. Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide A: People wanted to become scholar-officials for many reasons. One reason was that scholar-officials were considered elite members of society. As elite members they were allowed to perform many important jobs in the government. Also people admired them for their knowledge and ethics. Additionally, they were subject to reduced penalties for breaking the law. Lastly, many scholar-officials became wealthy as a result of expensive gifts given to them from people seeking their aid. These are the reasons why people would want to become scholar- officials.
