2 Background Information Sherman gives President Lincoln the victory he needs to get re-elected in 1864 Sherman's plan in the spring of 1864 is to destroy the South’s railroads and industry to the best of his ability.

4 Sherman’s March Across the Confederacy Started in the Spring of 1864 – Marched 100,000 troops south from Tennessee to take control of Atlanta Georgia Sherman managed to avoid attacks by Confederate General Johnston and Hook

5 Siege of Atlanta Atlanta is surrounded by Sherman’s men and they slowing advance onto the city It is destroyed by artillery, and fire All residents are ordered by Sherman to leave – “War is war, and not popularity seeking” Control of Atlanta seals the deal for Lincoln’s re-election

7 Sherman’s March to the Sea Shaman's next target is Savannah in November of 1864 He takes 60,000 men with the goal to “make Georgia howl” Uses total warfare (total destruction of all civilian and economic resources) – Ruins the economy and the South’s ability to fight – Destroyed railroads, bridges, crops, livestock, burned plantations and businesses, and freed the slaves

9 Sherman reached Savannah on December 10, 1864 – Created a 60 mile wide path of destruction (here to Lancaster) – Broke the South’s will to fight – Lead to anger and resentment of the North for many decades to follow
